Koinobori-inspired hanging fish: 2nd grade
Talked with the kids about koinobori and Children’s Day/Boy’s Day in Japan. Showed them traditional fish flags and actual koi fish patterns. Discussed the colors and meanings of each fish flag. We also reviewed color mixing and choosing color palettes.
My fish template is above— every kid followed step-by-step instructions and drew out their own template with me. Then we cut the fins and began to paint our fish. Painting took them two days (the fish paper is 12”x16”) so on the second day of painting we talked about laying wet paint over dry paint.
Kids then picked 3 streamer colors to add a little fun on the tails and now I’m assembling the fish to take home! I’m just using Ugly Braid string to hang the fish.
